Slovakia joining the Euro?
03 March - 04 March 2008, Brussels (Economic and Financial Policy 2008)
The Euro will be 10 years old next year and, at first glance, enlargement of the monetary union seems to be proceeding rather smoothly. Malta and Cyprus joined on 1st January 2008, after Slovenia last year, bringing the Euro area members to 15.
The discussion about the eurozone enlargement is topical if we consider that Slovakia should be the next new member state closer to the fulfillment of the Maastricht convergence criteria.
The Slovaks are currently trying hard to keep the inflation under control in order to be ready to join at the beginning of 2009. But will there be the political will in the eurozone to reward them with membership?
This press briefing - tailored for Slovak national and regional press - aims at analysing the effects of the Euro adoption on the country's economy and will provide fresh and up-dated information about the current status of the negotiations.
