Eu External Co-operation in Action - special focus on Gender and Development
19 January - 21 January 2009, Brussels (EuropeAid 2008/2009)

The European Union is the world’s biggest aid donor, committing a considerable part of its budget to external assistance, with aims to fight poverty and promote peace, democracy and security. Yet, how effective are the existing aid delivery mechanisms? Does the money provided by European taxpayers really make a difference for poorer countries? Is bureaucracy slowing down efficient aid?
The European Journalism Centre, at the initiative of EuropeAid, is organising a programme of briefings to answer and debate these fundamental questions.
This three-day intensive briefing has a special focus on Gender and the Millennium Development Goals. Reporters will discuss external assistance with key players for full background briefings on policies and projects in the field. Among the speakers featured, key officials, independent analysts, MEPs and NGO representatives.
Through these meetings reporters will gain a clearer understanding of the EU’s role in external co-operation, intimately connected to EU's External Relations strategies. Sessions will cover how aid is managed, focussing on its actions in the field and the results achieved.
Journalists covering Foreign Affairs, Social and/or Development issues are invited to present their candidature.
