The euro is currently shared by 15 of the European Union's Member States, which together make up the euro area. The introduction of the euro, in 1999, was a major step in European integration. It has also been one of its major successes: around 320 million EU citizens now use it as their currency and enjoy its benefits, which will spread even more widely as other EU countries adopt it.

In co-operation with Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission, the European Journalism Centre will organise from 19 to 22 January, in Brussels, a four-day seminar on the Euro Area economy and the 10 years of the Euro.

The seminar is especially tailored to journalists specialised in economic and financial issues from the Euro zone countries as well as from the opt-out EU Member States. It will, notably, analyse the EU’ s response to the financial crisis and the role of the European currency in the stability of European markets.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet European institutions and independent experts and attend the press conference of the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Mr. Joaquin Almunia, following the meeting of EU’ s Economic and Financial Affairs ministers’ Council (ECOFIN).
