The recent economic crisis has brought the employment rate across the EU down to 69%, and the unemployment rate up to 10%. Under the EU’s growth strategy for the coming decade (Europe 2020), the European Union has agreed on an employment rate target for women and men of 75% for the 20-64 years age group by 2020.

The European Journalism Centre in co-operation with the European Commission offers 30 journalists coming from EU-27 the opportunity to reflect during a two-day seminar on Europe’s ambitious commitment to ensure a highly skilled workforce necessary to develop a competitive, sustainable and innovative economy in line with Europe 2020 goals.

Held in Brussels, between 10-11 March 2011, the seminar offers journalists the opportunity to attend on 10th March the Future of European Labour Markets Conference with Nobel Prize laureate in Economic Sciences Christopher Pissarides, Professor at the London School of Economics.

The conference will be opened by László Andor, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.

Speakers from the European Commission, EU member states, as well as experts from the Centre for European Policy Studies, Bruegel, Eurofund, European Trade Union, will take part in the conference.

On the second day the journalists will be given a further insight into the Europe 2020 strategy and visit projects run under the European Social Fund.

The organisers cover the travel arrangements, accommodation and meals for the duration of the programme.

The event is open for journalists from national print, broadcast and online media from the EU-27.
