Although reliable and comprehensive data-based evidence is often lacking, experts agree that trafficking in persons has significantly increased in recent years. Often, women and men, boys and girls, who find themselves in vulnerable positions are traded for the purpose of sexual exploitation, forced labour, removal of organs, domestic servitude, forced marriage, begging, the exploitation of criminal activities, illegal adoption as well as other forms of exploitation.

To tackle this issue, also referred to as “the new slave trade", the EU has recently launched a Strategy towards the Eradication of Trafficking in Human Beings which is a set of concrete and practical measures to be implemented over the next five years: 2012 to 2016.

But how efficient will this set of measures be? Will it stop traffickers from making profit through this criminal activity?

To answer these and other questions, the European Journalism Centre is organising a two-day seminar, in Brussels on 24-25 September 2012, for top-tier national media from the EU Member States. Selected journalists will have an opportunity to learn more about the policy developments and work of the EU Institutions and Agencies in order to further support a comprehensive response against trafficking in human beings.
