With the aim to strike a deal on the EU budget for 2014-2020 before the end of the year, the EU leaders will meet at an extraordinary European Council meeting on 22-23 November dedicated exclusively to reaching an agreement on the EU's multiannual financial framework (MFF) 2014-2020.

The Netherlands is one of the EU’s biggest net contributors and also one of the few countries to give the EU an annual statement explaining how it has spent EU money. The Dutch government aims during the MFF 2014-2020 negotiations to substantially reduce the Netherlands’ contributions, to freeze EU spending, to modernise the EU budget, and to reform the financing method of the budget.

Ahead of the special European Council meeting, the European Journalism Centre will organise on behalf of the European Commission Representation in the Netherlands, a one-day seminar on the EU budget 2014-2020: growth opportunities and challenges for the Dutch regions. 12 Dutch journalists will have the opportunity to get an insight into the negotiating box of the MFF, the Dutch position regarding the MFF as well as the budgetary priority items for the Netherlands: agriculture, research, innovation, and transport.

The seminar will take place in Brussels on 19 November and will give attending media access to Brussels-based independent experts, representatives from the EC, and the Dutch regions.

The organisers will cover accommodation, travel and meals during the programme.
