Covering the Winter 2013 Economic Forecast

21 February - 22 February 2013, Brussels (Economic and Financial Policy 2013)

The European Commission publishes short-term macroeconomic forecasts twice a year, in the spring and autumn. The forecasts, produced by the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN), concentrate on the Member States, the euro area and the EU, but also include outlooks for candidate countries as well as some non-EU countries.

According to the Commission's autumn forecast released in November 2012, the consequences of the financial crisis continued to weigh on the short-term economic outlook for the EU and the euro area in 2012. The outlook for the EU economy remained fragile, but a gradual return to GDP growth was projected for 2013, with further strengthening in 2014.

In the context of this difficult process of macroeconomic rebalancing and a gradual improvement in Europe's growth outlook, the European Journalism Centre in co-operation with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs, is tailoring a media seminar for a specialised group of 18 journalists from the EU27 covering economic and financial issues.

The event will feature panel discussions as well as on and off the record talks with senior members of
the EU institutions (including the EU Commission and the EU Parliament) as well as experts from the NGO, think tank and academic communities in Brussels. Participating journalists will have the exclusive opportunity to attend the winter 2013 European Economic Forecast press conference by Olli Rehn, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Euro.

The discussions will be lively, informal and should significantly help those attending to get the inside track on where the EU economy and currency is and what future predictions are being made about it.

The seminar will be held from 21-22 February 2013 in Brussels. The organisers will cover travel, accommodation and some meals. For more information, please contact Malou Oldenhof at [email protected]

This seminar is organised with financial and organisational support from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs.
