EU-US trade agreement negotiations: Looking behind the scenes of the biggest trade deal in the world

27 November - 27 November 2013, Brussels (DG TRADE)

The European Journalism Centre, in co-operation with the European Commission’s DG Trade, invites 30 journalists from the EU28 to take a first hand look at the current status of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations. This one-day high-level event will take place in Brussels on 27 November 2013.

TTIP aims at removing trade barriers in a wide range of economic sectors to make it easier to buy and sell goods and services between the EU and the US. On top of cutting tariffs across all sectors, the EU and the US want to tackle barriers behind the customs border – such as differences in technical regulations, standards and approval procedures.

The TTIP negotiations will also look at opening both markets for services, investment, and public procurement. They could also shape global rules on trade. Because the EU-US trade relationship is already the biggest in the world – each day goods and services worth €2 billion are being traded, every trade barrier we remove could result in significant economic gains. An ambitious agreement could result in millions of euros of savings to companies and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

The event is exclusively catered for specialist and expert journalists in the field of EU affairs.

The European Commissioner for Trade, Karel De Gucht and Ignacio Garcia-Bercero, EU’s chief negotiator will respectively make the opening and the closing of the programme. The selected participants will also have the opportunity to discuss the TTIP with DG Trade officials and independent experts.
