Journalist seminar on the European Year of Citizens

04 December - 04 December 2013, Brussels (DG COMM)

In cooperation with the Directorate-General for Communication of the European Commission, the European Journalism Centre invites 18 journalists from the EU28 to participate in a one-day seminar on European citizenship. The event will take place on 4 December 2013 in Brussels.

The year of 2013 was marked as the European Year of Citizens and dedicated to stimulate active dialogue on the rights of EU citizens among governments, businesses and civil societies at all levels. The Maastricht Treaty, which was signed in 1992, introduced the concept of citizenship of the European Union that today complements national citizenship. While European citizenship provides more rights, not only to individuals but also for the economy, it was found that public awareness of the rights needs to be raised in order to maximise the benefits of citizenship. The year aimed to explore the future of European citizenship and how the citizens themselves want the EU to be by 2020.

The seminar will provide an opportunity to further understanding on the concept of the EU and its citizenship, as well as the opportunities and challenges in the context of the current crisis. The participants will also attend the Annual Seminar of the Former Members of the European Parliament on "Europe of values: who we are and what we stand for" where Viviane Reding, the Vice-President of the European Commission, and other high-level speakers are confirmed to address the audience.

Flights, accommodation and meals during the programme will be covered by the organisers.

Interested journalists should apply online or send an email to Lisa Bushart ([email protected]).
