EU-US Trade Talks: Looking behind the scene of the biggest trade deal in the world

02 April - 03 April 2014, Brussels (DG TRADE)

The European Journalism Centre, in co-operation with the European Commission's DG Trade, invites 30 journalists from the EU28 to take stock of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations to date and to assess progress made after the first three rounds of talks.
This high-level event will take place in Brussels on 2 and 3 April 2014, after the fourth round of the negotiations has taken place in March 2014.

The aim of the TTIP is to liberalise trade and investment between the EU and the US. It is expected to result in more jobs and growth and assist Europe in its long-term recovery from the economic crisis. On top of cutting tariffs across all sectors, the EU and the US want to tackle barriers behind the customs border – such as differences in technical regulations, standards and approval procedures.

The European Commissioner for Trade, Karel De Gucht and Ignacio Garcia-Bercero, EU's chief negotiator will respectively make the opening and the closing of the programme. The selected participants will also have the opportunity to discuss the TTIP with DG Trade top officials, such as Damien Levie, Head of Unit for Trade Relations with the USA and Canada and Fernando Perreau De Pinninck, Head of Unit for industrial tariff and non-tariff negotiations. Additionally, the journalists are invited to attend a dinner debate with MEP Daniel Caspary from the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade.

The event is exclusively catered for specialist and expert journalists in the field of EU affairs.
The organisers will cover travel, accommodation and some meals.
