In cooperation with the Directorate General for Enlargement of the European Commission, the European Journalism Centre invites 15 journalists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey to participate in a two-day seminar on the topic of EU enlargement and the rule of law.

The event will take place on 19-20 June 2014 in Estonia, a country where corruption levels in an international comparison are considered to be low.

The press trip aims to give attending journalists detailed insights into the 'openings chapters' of accession negotiations, i.e. those related to key issues of the rule of law. The programme will offer the opportunity to hear from and interact with Estonian national experts on best practices from Estonia on how to fight against the corruption and organised crime. In this regard, several visits to the national Estonian authorities dealing with fight against the corruption and organised crime will be envisioned.

The 'rule of law' chapters are thought to be the pillars of the negotiations and are opened in the initial phase of the process. The seminar will give an opportunity to go to the level of detail which is not possible during the day-to-day work of journalists and it aims to improve the quality of reporting in this crucial and sensitive area.

Flights, accommodation and meals during the programme will be covered by the organisers.

Interested journalists should apply online or send an email to Malou Oldenhof (oldenhof@ejc.net).

*This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo Declaration of Independence.
