The European Inventor Award presented annually by the European Patent Office (EPO) pays tribute to the creativity of inventors, whose quest for new ideas drives technological progress and economic growth, shapes our society and improves our daily lives. The award not only gives inventors the recognition they deserve, it also encourages future innovation.

This year's European finalists represent Sweden, Austria, Germany, Italy, Belgium, France, the UK, Denmark, Spain and Poland. Their ground-breaking inventions come from the areas of biotechnology, construction, environment, mechanics, medical technology, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications and traffic safety. Please find more information on the finalists here.

In 2013, EPO patent filings grew for the fourth consecutive time in a row and reached a new record level. In total the EPO received 266 000 patent filings last year, 2.8% more than in 2012 and a new all-time high. "This growth is proof that companies from around the world continue to see Europe more and more as a premier hub of innovation. The strong position of European companies in patent-intense technologies once more underlines the central role of these sectors for employment and growth in the EU economy" said EPO President Benoit Battistelli. The US and Japan again had the bulk of filings, while China and South Korea once more claimed the lion's share of the growth. Filings from Europe remained stable overall, with some countries such as the Netherlands, Ireland and Sweden making gains, and others slowing: besides the UK also Belgium, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The list of top filing companies at the EPO was again headed by Samsung followed by Siemens and Philips. With BASF (5th), Robert Bosch (6th) and Ericsson (10th), three more European companies were among the top ten, well ahead of Asia with three companies, and the US with two.

For the second time in a row, the EPO and the European Journalism Centre are pleased to invite 30 media professionals to cover this year's award ceremony and to attend a press event organised alongside the European Inventor Award. The press trip will take place in Berlin - Europe's hottest startup capital ? on 16 and 17 June 2014. The programme will include panel discussions on innovation and investment trends in Europe and ways for delivering innovation-led and digitally-powered growth. The agenda will also consist of fireside chats with EPO President Benoit Battistelli, some of the leading German venture capitalists and government representatives and company visits to some of Berlin's most innovative SMEs. Journalists will attend a networking reception with this year's award finalists, European industry and national representatives and a seat at the gala award ceremony, where the winners of Europe's "Oscars of innovation" will be announced.

Please note that specialised reporters covering technology, industry and innovation will be given priority. Participants are expected to arrive in Berlin on 15 June. Departure time is planned for 17 June in the late afternoon.

If you are interested to attend the event, please apply online. For more information about the press trip, please contact EJC Project Manager, Ms Biba Klomp (klomp@ejc.net).
