Press trip to Burkina Faso

04 May - 08 May 2014, Burkina Faso (DG ECHO)

In cooperation with the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) department, the European Journalism Centre is organising a press visit for 12 EU journalists on 4-8 May 2014 to the West African nation of Burkina Faso.
The field visit takes place two years after a devastating food crisis in the Sahel region which mobilized an unprecedented aid effort. In spite of this, prospects are again bleak for the region after average harvests with more than 20 million food insecure people and 5 million acutely malnourished children expected in 2014. The number of displaced people has increased by half since 2012 as a result of conflict in the region putting even more strain on the host communities. Burkina Faso has recorded a slight drop in the number of food insecure and acutely malnourished children, but needs remain nonetheless high. 35 000 Malian refugees in the north of the country also continue to rely on humanitarian aid for their most basic needs The visit is scheduled at the beginning of the so-called 'lean season' when food stocks and other resources start running low until the next harvest in September-October.
The purpose of this visit is to look at the challenges and achievements of EU aid in saving lives but also in strengthening people's resilience to food insecurity, climate hazards and natural disasters whilst underscoring the continued needs of Malian refugees.

The organisers will cover travel, accommodation and most meals.

Please note that journalists specialised in the subject and feature writers will be given priority in the selection process. A knowledge of French would also be an advantage.

Interested journalists should apply online as soon as possible as places are limited.
