Media seminar on transatlantic trade talks

03 December - 04 December 2014, Brussels (DG TRADE)

The European Journalism Centre, in co-operation with the European Commission's DG Trade, invites 20 journalists from the EU28 to take stock of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations and to discuss the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada (CETA).

This high-level event will take place in Brussels on 3 and 4 December 2014.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, aims to remove a wide range of barriers to bilateral commerce. The EU and the US launched the negotiations in June 2013 and have concluded the seventh round of the negotiations in Washington in October 2014. The aim of a TTIP is to stimulate more trade and investment, and, in the process, to produce more economic growth and employment. It is potentially the biggest trade deal in the world, promoting sustainable economic growth, creating quality jobs, and foster financial stability in both the EU and the US.

The seminar will include a session on the economic benefits of the EU-US trade deal and will also discuss investment protection and investor to state dispute settlement procedure, or ISDS.

The journalists will have a unique opportunity to meet all of the central EU actors involved in the TTIP negotiations, including the new EU Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmstrom and the chief negotiator, Ignacio Garcia-Bercero. Additionally, the seminar will feature a dinner debate hosted by the German MEP Bernd Lange, the chair of the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade.

The event is exclusively catered for specialist and expert journalists in the field of EU affairs.
