EU measures to tackle youth unemployment

07 May - 08 May 2015, Brussels (DG EMPL)

The European Journalism Centre, in co-operation with the European Commission's DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, invites 28 journalists from the EU28 to follow a special seminar on the youth employment in Europe. This high-level event will take place in Brussels on 7 and 8 May 2015 and will coincide with the conference of Youth Guarantee pilot projects organised by the European Commission.

Over 5 million young people (under 25) were unemployed in the EU28 area in July 2014. This represents an unemployment rate of more than 23%. Under the Youth Guarantee, Member states should ensure that, within four months of leaving school or losing a job, young people under 25 can either find a good-quality job suited to their education, skills and experience or acquire the education, skills and experience required to find a job in the future through an apprenticeship, a traineeship or continued education.

This seminar will present to the journalists concrete examples and success stories of EU funded projects to ensure young people's successful transition into work and will give the opportunity to the participants to attend the conference organised on 8 May which will gather Youth Guarantee coordinators and project coordinators who will present their national projects to tackle youth unemployment.

The journalists will have a unique opportunity to meet and receive first-hand information from all of the EU actors involved in the youth unemployment, including the EU commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, Marianne Thyssen.

The event is exclusively catered for specialist and expert journalists in the field of EU affairs, social affairs and employment.
