In cooperation with the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) department, the European Journalism Centre is organising a press visit for eight EU28 journalists to the Kakuma Refugee Camp in North West Kenya. The visit will consist of three on-site days from 24-26 May 2016 and is part of a larger campaign on the occasion of the World Refugee Day 20 June.

The field visits will take place in the Kakuma Camp itself, home to over 180,000 refugees, whose numbers have been on the increase ever since conflict started in neighbouring South Sudan. The foreseen visit will enable journalists to become familiar with the EU's humanitarian role in this complex crisis, and to gather human interest stories in a context where a global strategic challenge is reflected in the daily lives of refugees. Meetings with aid beneficiaries, field experts, civil society representatives and humanitarian workers from partner organisations are foreseen.

The purpose of the visit is to raise awareness about the humanitarian assistance that the EU provides to refugees close to their countries of origin, as well as about its role as a key humanitarian actor in the region. It will illustrate EU support for basic needs including shelter, food, water, medical attention and youth education,

World Refugee Day was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the UNHCR on 20 June 2001. Since then, the UNHCR celebrates this day with activities around the world.

The organisers will cover travel, accommodation, most meals and insurance. Please note that journalists specialised in the region and feature writers will be given priority in the selection process.

Interested journalists should apply online as soon as possible as places are limited. The specific days in late May as mentioned above will be available soon. For more information, contact Marjan Tillmans at tillmans@ejc.net.
