Covering the European Small and Mid-cap Awards 2016, November 17, Brussels

17 November - 18 November 2016, Brussels (DG GROW)

The 4th edition of the European Small and Mid-Cap Awards will be presented by the EuropeanIssuers, the Federation of the European Securities Exchanges and the European Commission on November 17 at the Albert Hall in Brussels. At the awards ceremony, 12 dynamic companies in four categories will be honoured for their great achievements in successfully raising capital at European public capital markets and four of them will be distinguished as winners of the 2016 European Small and Mid-Cap Awards.

The aim of the annual Awards Ceremony is to promote best practices and encourage more small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to access capital markets via IPOs. Europe has no shortage of successful high growth companies, and the Awards Ceremony is a EU flagship event that highlights some of the most exciting European SMEs, which have gained access to capital markets via an Initial Public Offering. The winners and the finalists are role models for SMEs in Europe and underline the strategic role of SMEs in creating growth and jobs. This year, an independent jury, set up by the European Commission, selected a short list of three companies for each category: International Star, Rising Star, Star of Innovation and Star of 2016. A complete list of the nominees can be found at: http://www.europeansmallandmidcapawards.eu/theshortlist

Better education of entrepreneurs, decision makers in public services and the general public is essential to create an environment that fosters European start-ups and helps them to scale up, which is a top European Commission priority in the context of the Capital Markets Union (CMU) and the upcoming Start-up and Scale-up Initiative. The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs therefore steps up its activities and is pleased, together with the European Journalism Centre, to invite 28 media professionals to cover the awards ceremony and to attend a press event organised alongside the prestigious ceremony.

The press event will take place in Brussels on 17 November, 2016. It offers first-hand information on many of the most dynamic policy areas in the field of finance. The programme will include discussions on the Investment Plan, EU financial instruments, alternative financing and FinTech, and a Q&A session with the winners of the 2015 Awards. The agenda will also consist of fireside chats with this year’s finalists, European Commission’s leading experts and jury members, who judge proposals for the European Small and Mid-Cap Awards, including Dr. Jean-Pierre Paelinck, President and Secretary General of the World Federation of Investors, Turid Elisabeth Solvang, Chairwoman of ecoDa, the European Confederation of Directors Associations, and James Wood, small cap specialist at Winterflood Securities, Europe's largest Market Maker, in the UK.

Journalists will attend a networking reception with this year's awards finalists, and over 200 key stakeholders, European industry and national representatives and policy makers as well as have a seat at the gala awards ceremony, where the winners will be announced. Key interlocutors present include Deirdre Somers, CEO of the Irish Stock Exchange and FESE President; Luc Vansteenkiste, President of LANNOO and EuropeanIssuers Chairman; and Fabrice Demarigny, Partner, Mazars.

Please note that specialised journalists covering SMEs, innovation, business, employment and EU affairs will be given priority. Participants are expected to arrive in Brussels in the morning of November 17. Departure is planned for November 18.
