The European Journalism Centre, in cooperation with the European Commission's Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development, invites 12 EU28 journalists on a three-day press visit to explore development cooperation between the EU and Colombia. The press trip will coincide with the visit of the EU Special Envoy for the Peace Process, Eamon Gilmore.

For more than 20 years, the European Union's cooperation with Colombia has focused on supporting the country in its efforts to promote more inclusive economic and social development, reduce poverty and inequality, increase access to social services, increase social cohesion, address governance issues and strengthen institutions. The existence of a protracted and entrenched armed conflict has also required support for Colombia's efforts to mitigate the consequences of restricted access to parts of the territory and to reduce development gaps between regions and urban areas. Following the peace agreement between the Government of Juan Manuel Santos and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia in 2016, the EU has launched a Trust Fund in support of Colombia's post-conflict peace building efforts which will support the people of Colombia at local level with a focus on most affected rural areas.

Against this background, the three-day press trip will start in the capital and the agenda will include field visits to different EU-funded projects. Colombia was selected because of the importance of the EU support to Colombia's post-conflict and peace building efforts. As Colombia is overcoming more than five decades of war, the European Union continues its unwavering support to the countries' peace building efforts, by mobilising an overall support package of short and medium term measures in the form of loans, technical assistance and grants. The trip will be the opportunity to visit projects launched under the Trust Fund. The aim of the visit is to enable EU journalists to see for themselves the work that the EU is doing on the ground by taking them to visit the areas where projects are being launched under the Trust Fund and by providing briefings which would give them a deeper understanding of the context involved.

A detailed programme will be announced shortly.

Please note that the organisers will cover travel and accommodation during the three-day visit. The arrival in Bogota is planned on April 4, 2017 and the departure on April 8, 2017.

Journalists selected for the trip will have the opportunity to arrive earlier or leave the country later than the group, provided that the flights can be organised at the same cost. However, those that stay longer in the country will have to make their own arrangements for their additional days at their own cost. For more information about the programme, please contact Biba Klomp at klomp@ejc.net.

If you are interested in attending this press trip, please register & apply directly on our EJC Seminars website by March 17, 2017. The event will give priority to journalists covering foreign affairs and development issues. Please note, all seminar dates, times and project visits are subject to change.
